Waterbound - Traditional
-- Stephanie Hope, lead vocals We learned Waterbound from a recording by Kathy Kallick
of songs her mother used to sing to her This traditional American song attracted us by its vital old time drive, (as well as the
farm animal references that the Annies seem to find so fascinating).
Ballad of Henry Lee (click to listen) – Mary Bliefnick
-- Mary Bliefnick, lead vocals Another Mary B. original, inspired by years of watching re-runs of the Andy Griffith Show and a
moon-shining song by Becky Bueller, "Charlie Lawson's Still". Hillbilly Bill – The West Sisters (Oma Corder) -- Patti Nance, lead vocals
In the early 80's Patti went to Council Bluffs, IA for Bob Everhart's Old Time Country Music Festival
and heard the West Sisters perform this song. Luckily, she had her trusty tape recorder with her, and even more luckily, she had it turned on when they were performing! Oma Corder still performs with the Corder Family on the SPBGMA and Tri-State circuits, and it is truly an honor for us to record this great song.
Pig In A Pen – Traditional -- Cynthia McKechnie, lead vocals There are so many songs about barnyard animals, the Annies decided we could make a whole set list of them. Blondie-Annie does
a great job turning this into a "girl power" song by stating "I got a pig home in a pen, corn to feed him on, all I need is a good old boy
to feed him when I'm gone."
Marry Me / Billy In The Lowground – Dolly Parton / Traditional Karla Campbell, lead vocals There is something sweet and innocent about a young girl's first kiss, and Dolly Parton tells that story so well!
This song took on particular significance for the Annies after Karla's very public proposal from Jimmy Campbell on-stage at the Lathrop Bluegrass Festival in September 2004.
"Billy in the Lowground" is an
old-time fiddletune. According to "Roots of American Fiddle Music", ' there ain't no notes to it . . you just play it". Here are several indications of the tune's infancy, including an early version featuring Dr. Humphrey Bate and his Possum Hunters:
Walk Along John – traditional -- Instrumental Missouri Fiddler Emmanuel Wood recorded this old traditional fiddle tune
in the 1970's and we learned it from one of our favorite fiddlers: Betse Ellis of The Wilders. The Annies have given this tune a parenthetical title during Bluegrass festival season – "Walkin' to the John."
Rocky Road Blues – Bill Monroe -- Patti Nance, lead vocals It was Kathy Kallick's version of this tune that caught Patti Annie's attention and she's been playing it around campfires, on stage and
in the car ever since. It's a classic Bill Monroe song,
and you can't go wrong with that!.M-Motor Vehicle - By Ben Vaughn -- Karla Campbell, lead vocals
If you heard the original version of this song, you would not recognize it "Annie-ized". Ben Vaughn is a self-professed "Free-lance Bum", but somehow found his way into writing TV show themes ("That 70's Show" and "Third Rock From the Sun"). We love this song because everyone can relate to it.
Cornbread and Butterbeans- Carolina Sunshine Trio -- Stephanie Hope, lead vocals An old fashion novelty song from the 40', was originally sung by the Carolina Sunshine Trio on WPAQ. References to more
farm animals and "eating beans and making love" makes it a natural fit for the Annies. Learned (stolen?) from our friend Jill around the campfire at Winfield.Shady Grove – Traditional -- Cynthia McKechnie, lead vocals
Another
boy-crazy song about young love, and your rotten sister who steals
your beaux. This was inspired by a Patti Loveless recording, and we have a lot of fun with this song. October Skies – Mary Bliefnick -- Mary Bliefnick, lead vocals This is the first song
written by our own Mary B, while enjoying a beautiful October morning. Is it about the passing of a season, or a love grown cold? You decide. We Shall Rise – Traditional --
Karla Campbell, lead vocals Karla first learned this song at vacation bible school back in the 1970's, and heard it again on Emmy Lou Harris's "Angel Band" recording from the 1980's. Ya just can't beat a rousing
gospel tune with 4 part harmony, which is why we arranged it the way you hear us do it. (More info on John Thomas and the lyrics) 20 Naked Pentecostals in a Pontiac - Chris Stuart -- Patti Nance, lead vocals Believe it or not, this is a TRUE story. Check out the details
. Patti always introduces this song live by telling folks to be sure to test the
Spirit when it tells you to do something like this . . . because it might not be the right Spirit moving you. |
